Pandit Maharaj-ji worked intensely on developing the skill of Rita’s local dancers. It was also the second year that the company brought Pandit Birju Maharaj over from India, who had recently received honors as an invited choreographer at the 1991 American Dance Festival. We couldn’t afford to put them up in hotels, so they stayed with us, and that gave us the opportunity to share each others knowledge and power.” “There was tremendous amount of sharing and caring happening. The process was very important for Rita-di’s artistic process, and she became energized after meeting these artists and seeing their work. ![]() “It was about showcasing the beauty and complexity of Indian classical dance,” says KDT’s Artistic Director, Rita Mustaphi, “Even though we were rooted in the Kathak and Bharatnatayam dance styles, we wanted to give more of a wholesome idea of classical Indian dance and culture through this diverse assortment of myths and legends.” The artists performed seven different styles of Indian classical dance, which included Odissi, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, and Mohini Attam. Myths & Legends was the greatest undertaking in Nritya Jyoti Dance Theatre’s history, bringing together several of the leading classical Indian dancers from India, France, and the United States for a performance on January 19, 1991.
